Livingston Family Information

    Our first documentary knowledge of our William F. Livingston came from the 1850 census of Itawamba Co, MS where his name was spelled Livingstone. Subsequently, we have seen various spellings, sometimes with two different spellings on the same document. These other spellings include, but are not limited to, Livingston, Levingston, Levinston, and Leviston. My father remembered his grandmother Mollie (Mary Elizabeth) and knew that her maiden name was Livingston, and that some of her people were German. He also knew that one of Mollie's sisters had married a Beene and another sister had married a Dalton. He knew also that one of her sisters had married a preacher. He knew also, that his grandparents, Obediah Franklin Beene and Mary Elizabeth "Mollie" Livingston, had met and married in Itawamba Co, MS and had moved to Texas in the 1880's. He believes that our Livingstons are somehow related to the Livingstons of Livingston, Texas, but does not know how. We haven't found this link, yet. So this was our starting point.
    William F. Livingston married Ann L. Yeager on October 07, 1830 in either Limestone Co or Morgan Co, AL. One CD source gives Limestone Co, but other sources give Morgan Co. We haven't checked, but this could be due to boundary changes, or the couple may have lived in one county, but the courthouse of the other county may have been closer. We are grateful to Livingston family researcher, Pam Stone, for sharing this information which she initially received from C. Y. Thomas, a Yeager family researcher. In fact, we have received clues from many other researchers! A family member had told us that they believed William's wife was Ann L. Dalton, but that is not the case. However, one of their children, and possibly two children, married Daltons. We believe that it is the Yeagers who were of German origin, but we have not ruled out the possibility that the Livingstons may have been of German origin (Liebenstein, anglicized). However, we think our Livingston's were probably Scottish.
    We have not yet proven William F. Livingston's relationship to other Livingston's in Morgan Co, AL and other nearby locations. We believe he is probably related to Samuel Livingston and Phoebe Head (and some of their descendants live in Livingston, Texas!), but we do not know how. We have William and Ann's children listed below.

"Mattie" Livingston's descendants, and to Becky ? for verifying that Catherine (Kate) was a daughter of William and Ann and had married Rufus Owen "Dombey" Beene. (My father had said Mollie had a sister Kate, but she wasn't on our first documentary source, the 1850 census, as she was not born till 1851).  Recently, Patty Reber, another descendant of Martha A. Note: The information in the above section was from 1850 Itawamba Co, MS census except:

1. Yeager surname for William's wife

2. Children known of by family tradition who weren't on 1850 census:

    a. "Mattie" has now been shown to be virtually certainly the same as Martha A. She married Charles Fox Dalton May 27, 1867 in Itawamba Co, MS, and family sources have previously said that one of the girls married a Dalton.
    b. "Jack" may be the same as Andrew J. (Both Mattie and an A. J. Livingston from Itawamba Co, MS married Daltons).  This may not be "Jack" after all as research by Pam Stone has shown that Andrew J.'s brother James was called "Jack" later on, and that they had an uncle James Livingston(e) who was possibly called "Jack."
    c. "Kate" was born in 1851.  

3. 1835 birth dates for Margaret and Marillah and twin info given to me by family researcher, Pam Stone.

4. We have a picture of Jack and family legend is that he was Mary Elizabeth "Mollie" Livingston's brother.  Researcher Pam Stone has pointed out two other possibilities for references to "Jack." See note a few lines above.  We now learn from researcher Laura Velasquez that our Andrew J. may well be the A. J. Livingston that married Mary A. Dalton (24 Sept 1868, Itawamba, MS and that Mary A. Dalton was sister of Charles Fox Dalton who married A. J. Livingston's sister Martha A. "Mattie" Livingston.

5. Kate as a dau. of William F. and Ann L. Livingstone given by REBANOVY@aol.com, another researcher. She also has birth year for Kate as 1851.

Note 2: One of the girls known to have married a Dalton, family sources

A descendant of a Mattie Livingston has written to say her ancestor married Charles Fox Dalton. After comparing notes, it appears that Mattie is our Martha A. Livingston showing on the 1850 Itawamba Co, MS as being six years old. Therefore, through the courtesy of the descendant, Laura Sherman Velasquez, we have been able to add Martha A. "Mattie's" descendants to our family tree!

LIVINGSTON, "Kate" Note: From Itawamba Co, MS marriages book 7, p 268, a Kate Livingston married a D. O. Beene on May 4, 1869

Margaret L. and Marillah S. Livingston were twins. Received the following from pamstone@digital.net: ..."I had no siblings except Marillah's twin sister, Margaret L. Livingston. Marillah's tombstone has her name as Marillah S., with dates of birth and death: b. 13 Mar 1835 d. 24 Oct 1894, Itawamba Co., MS; buried at Oak Grove, Fulton, Itawamba Co., MS. She was called Rillah. (Record of her grave marker is found in Cemetery Markings, Itawamba County, Mississippi, Betty Burton-Cruber; LOC#F347.I8 B87).

(2) Margaret Alice "Maggie, Mag" b. Sept 1858; m. Matison M. BEENE
(3) Katie Bell GRISSOM b. 1863; m. Steven Wesley RAPER; moved to IT (OK); I believe that his father may have been Henderson RAPER, to whom James Gassaway HARRIS sold land in Lee Co., MS; Katie and Steve's grandson may A.B. RAPER, who married ELLA LEILA HOWERTON, the youngest daughter of my great-grandparents, JAMES JUDSON HOWERTON & MOLLIE ANN AUSTIN, (sister of our grandfather, JAMES AUSTIN HOWERTON.)

(6) Luther R. GRISSOM b. 12 Aug 1870; d. 17 Nov 1895; buried at Oak Grove; m. Tennie MITCHELL, b. 4 Feb 1874; d. 14 July 1900. Their child was: Earl Egwart GRISSOM.
(7) Edwin F. “Ed” GRISSOM " b. Feb 1875; d. 1951; m. Ethel MERCHANT, b. 1881; d. 1965. Ed and Ethel are both buried at Saltillo Cemetery.
(8) Audie Gilbert “Dump” GRISSOM b. Apr 1876; d. Nov 1900; m. 3 Dec 1895, Georgia Ann LONG, b. 1877; d. 1932; dau. of George Hamby LONG & Belva Ann MCVAY. Audie & Georgia are buried at Oak Grove.

**MOLLIE (GEORGIA?) GRISSOM b. 5 Oct 1865, Itawamba Co., MS; d. 14 Jan 1942, Lincoln Co., OK; m. 16 Dec 1880, WILLIAM HENRY "HENRY" HARRIS, b. 5 Nov 1857, Itawamba Co., MS; d. 20 Nov 1938. Both Mollie and Henry are buried in Carney Cemetery, Carney, Lincoln Co., OK."
