Jacob Selman Beene is the young CSA soldier who found his dying brother, Johnny L. Beene, on the battlefield during the Battle of Atlanta. He gave him a drink of water, then was ordered to retreat. That was the last time he ever saw his brother. His grandson can remember Grandpa Jake saying how much it hurt him to leave Johnny on the battlefield. An account of this incident is given in The Bean Tree, by Estalee Beane Rankin. Many Beene men died during the Civil War, fighting on both sides.
