Note: No relatives of "Red" Clark or Nancy? Davis were found to take in Elbert and Estella when the parents died within a couple of weeks of each other.

Once, about 1905 or so, Elbert was running to catch a train when a total stranger stopped him and said, "You must be related to my old friend, "Red" Clark! You look just like him." Elbert was running to catch his train and did not stop to talk, but as soon as he was on the train and it was too late, he realized that he had missed a chance to find out something about his father!!! The man seemed to have pleasant memories of his old friend, "Red" Clark, but that is all we may ever know!!!

Help us solve a family mystery. Our g-grandmother, Nancy? DAVIS, and g-grandfather, Joe? "Red" CLARK," both passed away suddenly in 1890 near Mabank, TX near the Van Zandt Co/Kaufman Co, Texas line. Their children, Elbert b 1885, and Estella Mae b 1889, were with them. Nancy Davis had five other children by her first husband, Unknown LOVEL.

The LOVEL children were Ada, Emma/Amma, Johnny, Joe, and George. They had been staying with relatives, and when they were notified of their mother's death, the Lovell family did not know where to find relatives of Nancy Davis and "Red" Clark. So Estella Mae and Elbert were taken in by strangers, two different families (but the families made sure Elbert and Estella Mae knew each other).

Also, the Lovels kept in touch for many years with their younger siblings. Ada Lovel married E. T. Jernigan and the last correspondence we know of from her was received from Clovis, NM around 1930 or so. Emma/Amma married a McIvor and the last correspondence we know of came from Battle Creek, Michigan, also around 1930.

I have a picture of the Lovel boys in military uniform, probably marine, probably taken about 1920. Two of them visited Estella Mae around 1921 and showed her a large wad of cash they had won gambling and insisted on her accepting a cash gift from them. She never heard from them again and always wondered if they might have been killed for their money! They disappeared.

Elbert once went on a sort of pilgrimage, taking his young wife, and they traveled in a wagon for about a year, trying to retrace the probable route his parents took to wind up near Mabank, TX but never found a clue.

We never realized that he had something to go on. But, recently we have learned that somehow he believed that Joe Clark had owned land somewhere in the Panhandle of Texas at one time, and that he may have been in Albuquerque, NM and Tombstone, AZ at various times.

Also, as Nancy? Davis lay dying, she spoke to five year old Elbert in another language. That and other unknown clues led Elbert and others to presume she was of American Indian ancestry.

The only other thing we know is that "Red" Clark was a big, burly, red headed man with a military bearing. He was covered with scars that could have been either from battle or knife fights. He was attacked by several Mexican-Americans carrying knives near the Mabank community. He skillfully fought them off with a knife and was barely injured. From that and other unknown clues, Elbert thought he was a "professional" gambler.
